AI-Generated Content in Education: The Rise and Fall

Artificial intelligence has been a topic of discussion for many years now. With the release of ChatGPT-4, AI-generated content has gained a lot of attention regarding its role and impact on education. In January and February 2023, we conducted a study comprising anonymized data from tens of thousands of college and high school students worldwide using Copyleaks to answer the question: How prevalent is the use of AI-generated content in education?

Prevalence of AI-Generated Content in Education
To gauge trends, this month, we compared close to a million high school and college assignments submitted to Copyleaks between February and March 2023 across the globe. What we found continued to surprise us. When students knew an AI Content Detector was being used by their institute, almost across the board, there was a decrease in the use of AI-generated content.

The use of AI-generated content in education has been an area of concern for many years. While AI-generated content can be helpful for students who need assistance, it can also be detrimental to the learning process. The use of AI-generated content can lead to plagiarism, which can result in students receiving lower grades or even expulsion. Moreover, students who use AI-generated content may miss out on valuable learning opportunities, such as critical thinking, research skills, and writing skills.

The Impact of AI Content Detectors on Student Behavior
Our study showed that when students knew their institute was using an AI Content Detector, there was a significant decrease in the use of AI-generated content. This finding suggests that students are aware of the risks associated with using AI-generated content and are willing to change their behavior when necessary.

However, we also found that the use of AI-generated content remains prevalent in education. This finding suggests that more needs to be done to educate students about the risks of using AI-generated content and to promote the value of original work.

Conclusion
In conclusion, our study shows that the use of AI-generated content in education is prevalent, but students are aware of the risks associated with it. When students knew an AI Content Detector was being used by their institute, almost across the board, there was a decrease in the use of AI-generated content. However, more needs to be done to educate students about the risks of using AI-generated content and to promote the value of original work.

As educators, we have a responsibility to ensure that our students are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in their future endeavors. By promoting original work and discouraging the use of AI-generated content, we can help our students develop critical thinking, research skills, and writing skills that will serve them well in their academic and professional careers.
