Preventative Care Supporting a Friend

Substance use disorder can be a difficult issue to deal with, and it can be even more challenging when it affects someone you care about. Whether it's a close friend, family member, or loved one, it can be difficult to know what to do. Here are some tips on how to help someone with a substance use problem.

Signs of Substance Use Disorder

It's important to recognize the signs of substance use disorder in someone you care about. However, it's also important to note that not all of the following signs may be present in a person with a substance use problem. Here are some common signs:
  • Using more or for longer periods of time than intended, with an increased tolerance to the substance.
  • Unable to cut down or stop using despite attempts to do so.
  • Spending a lot of time using or recovering from use.
  • Experiencing intense cravings.
  • Negative impact on school and other responsibilities.
  • Difficulty keeping up with responsibilities.
  • Physical consequences such as blackouts, accidents, injuries, vomiting, passing out, or hospitalization.
  • Trouble with the law or getting into trouble.
  • Changes in personality when using.
  • Abandoning important or interesting activities in favor of substance use.
  • Engaging in risky behaviors while under the influence (e.g. driving, swimming, using machinery, walking in a dangerous area, or having unsafe sex).
  • Withdrawal symptoms such as trouble sleeping, shakiness, irritability, anxiety, depression, restlessness, nausea, or sweating when the effects of the substance wear off.
  • Continuing to use even though it causes depression, anxiety, or adds to other health problems.

Communicating Concern

If you have concerns about a friend's substance use, it's important to approach the conversation in a caring and non-judgmental manner. Here are some tips for communicating your concern:
  • Use "I" statements: Avoid blaming or lecturing, and instead, use specific examples to express your concern. For example, "I noticed that you've been missing a lot of class lately. I'm worried about how it might affect your grades."
  • Encourage other friends to talk to your friend: If other people in your friend group are also concerned, you can encourage them to express their concerns as well. However, it's important not to gang up on your friend, so avoid having too many people in the same meeting.
  • Listen without judgment: Be prepared to listen to your friend's perspective, even if they are angry or dismissive. It's important to understand that they may have already given the issue a lot of thought, or they may not be ready to hear your concerns.
  • Set boundaries: Let your friend know that you value your friendship, but also let them know if there are certain behaviors or activities that you are uncomfortable with. For example, you might say, "I care about you and I want to support you, but I don't feel comfortable being around you when you're using substances."

Supporting a Friend

While you can't force someone to change their behavior, there are still ways you can help a friend with a substance use problem. Here are some tips:
  • Listen: One of the most helpful things you can do for a friend with a substance use problem is to listen. By showing that you care and that you're there for them, you can provide a supportive environment where they feel comfortable discussing their challenges.
