Born on February 6th, 1452 in Lisbon, Joana of Portugal was the daughter of King Afonso V of Portugal and Isabel of Coimbra. From a young age, Joana had a strong desire to become a nun, but her father forbade it.
Despite multiple proposals of marriage, Joana remained steadfast in her commitment to her religious beliefs and joined the Dominican Convent of Jesus in Aveiro at the age of 23.
